2021 In Review - My 5 Favorite Reads

Five Of My Favorite Reads in 2021

My favorite genres are history, including both local history books and historical fiction,  and murder mysteries.  In addition to the books below, I also really enjoyed the Hamish Macbeth Series by  M.C. Beaton (I read the Agatha Raisin series by the same author in 2020) and the week between Christmas and New years I read the Midwinter Murders by Agatha Christie.  It's perfect for that time of year, not only because it's a seasonal theme, but because the stories are short, requiring just enough thought to be interesting, but not so much as to be tedious.

Finding Dorothy by Elizabeth Letts.  Historical Fiction, very factual, based on the life of Maud Baum, widow of the author of the book The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz.  Dual timeline, it switches between Maud's youth as the daughter of a leading suffragette, and her mission to make sure the 1939 movie stayed true to Franks vision.  It was a fantastic read, well done, and very interesting. https://amzn.to/3pCxRlI

Another book for my list of "How did I now know this??"  In 1939, Quintuplets were born in Ontario Canada.  Not only were the babies tiny, but they were born in a little farmhouse with no electricity.  They shouldn't have survived - and yet they did.  And then, In an effort to protect them from hucksters and showmen, the Ontario government took custody of the five identical babies, sequestering them in a private, custom-built hospital across the road from their family — and then, in a stunning act of hypocrisy, proceeded to exploit them for the next nine years. The Dionne Quintuplets became a more popular attraction than Niagara Falls, ogled through one-way screens by sightseers as they splashed in their wading pool at the center of a tourist hotspot known as Quintland. Their faces sold everything from Baby Ruth candy bars to Colgate toothpaste.  The Miracle and Tragedy of Dionne Quintuplets by Sarah Miller is a quick and easy read, based on true events, even though it seems more fantastic than any fiction I read this year.  https://amzn.to/3EIACX0

I first learned about the quintuplets from a mention of them in my absolute favorite fiction series this year - The Chief Inspector Armand Gamache books by Louise Penny.  I've read a couple of these before, out of order, and I have to admit, I never really understood all the fuss.  But consistently, for years,  these are rated as the BEST on every book list I am on.  So this year I started at book 1, and by book 3, I was telling everyone I know that they need to read these books.  Read them in order. It shouldn't matter, but it does. Learning the characters faults and failures, and seeing the mercy and grace that comes out of those faults and failures - it's inspiring in a way you would never expect from a series that is technically murder mysteries.  Absolutely, hands down, my favorite books this year.    Not only have I loved the Gamache books, but reading them has inspired us to check out assorted art and poetry books that came up in the series, as well as things like the Quintuplets story.  I made a sign for our home with one of the quotes from the books - "Ring the bells that still can ring, forget your perfect offering. There's a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in."  That quote is actually from a song, which introduced us to a new artist...  ( Don't let her recent co-author color your view - it's a completely separate book.  I certainly won't touch that one myself - I am well practiced at keeping politics out of my life.)

Well, Normally I'm well practiced at keeping politics out of my life.  Another one of my favorites this year did delve a bit into Russian politics in the 1980s.   The Chernobyl disaster occurred on April 25th 1986, but I truthfully knew very little about it.  The book details the reasons behind the explosion, and should probably be read by everyone, so we never allow that history to repeat itself. Midnight in Chernobyl by Adam Higginbotham. https://amzn.to/3EBfIZT

For a much lighter read, The Enola Holmes series by Nancy Springer was really good!  . There's a tv series based on these that I have not yet seen, but as a lover of all things Sherlock Holmes, I loved these books.  So far I have only read the older ones, but I was happy to see the author took advantage of the fame brought by the tv series to pen two more this year.  https://amzn.to/3406g5u

And because I'm terrible at just picking five favorites...  I also loved the Historical Fiction Florence Nightingale Mysteries by Christine Trent https://amzn.to/3qIVybw, Dan and I continued to enjoy the Andy Carpenter series by  David Rosenfelt  on our road trips Light mysteries, funny, but not silly - smart funny. Carpenter is a lawyer, who runs a dog rescue.  He managed to tie in a lot of mafia plots & big conspiracies, all without being silly, nor being too serious.   https://amzn.to/3Hq9Ynk and I have been REALLY enjoying the essays in What The Dog Saw by Malcom Gladwell.  I'm really not sure what I think of Gladwell just yet, and I can't say I would fully trust his interpretation of all events, but he has this knack for finding people who think differently, or have unique qualities or experiences.  They make you think, and in a good way, I think. https://amzn.to/3EGOykh

Cotton Ball Snowmen - A Kids Craft With Cricut

Cotton Ball Snowman  - A Kids Craft Made With Cricut

There is no svg - this was made in Design Space, just using shapes.
You can access the project here:
https://design.cricut.com/landing/project-detail/61c0bfc8471fadd522422d34

When you click on a Design Space project link, a box will open asking you if you want to open design space.  Tell it yes, and the project will load.

Upload your childs photo to the project, and use the grey circle to slice out the face you want to show through the frame.

I originally made this in card form, but we ended up gluing it closed, and putting a magnet on the back.  Having the second layer added stability for our magnet, so either way, if making this again, I would cut it this way.

My grandson just turned two.  He's had a lot of experience with "glue glue!" though, going through roughly a glue stick a day helping Grandma.  [If you follow my facebook page, I'm sure you have seen him helping with many projects her]  This was the first he was allowed to use the liquid glue, and he was quite excited.

We pulled the cotton balls apart a bit before gluing them fast.  He likes that part a lot too.

I added the hat and buttons, and the magnet on the back, with hot glue.  He handed me the pieces, but is not allowed to work with hot glue just yet.  :-)
There's a hole at the neck, between the circles, where ribbon fits through to make the scarf.  I used hot glue to attach that as well.

This was inspired by an Easy Peasy kids craft.  They have lots of great projects on their site, available for download if you subscribe.  They are not however, svgs, and most of the projects, such as this one,  can easily be recreated as cut files in Design Space.

Using Mail Merge & Avery Labels To Address Christmas Cards

Tip - Address labels and Mail Merge

I know, I know, we all had great plans of using the pens in cricut to address all of our Christmas cards...  but now it's 2 weeks before Christmas, and I don't know about you, but I needed something much faster.

Merry & Bright Charger Plate Wreath - Made With Free SVGS

Merry & Bright Dollar Tree Charger Wreath

The Merry & Bright SVG was part of a free bundle that no longer exists.  :-(

Free Wreath & Bow SVG
https://specialheartstudio.com/paper-christmas-wreath/

This wreath file is free from Special Hearts Studio - one of my absolute favorite designers.  Her files almost always work with 8.5x11 paper too!

On top of the tree is the first version, which I made with a dollar tree wreath form.  Then I made the church box card - a free file from the Bearded Housewife - and when I sat the card on top of the wreath, I found that I really loved them together!
The Advent Calendar tree is a free file from Jennifer Maker.  This is the advent calendar I made the most of this year, but the boxes slide out really easily, any time it is bumped the boxes fall out.  I'm still searching for the perfect advent calendar file, but this one was good enough for this year.

Find the free svg and instructions for the church box card here:
https://thebeardedhousewife.com/christmas-church-box-cards/

Also on my desk this week:
The penguin card is actually the penguin egg holder from Digital Gems.  I used the contour button to remove the egg cut out from the white piece, then attached text to write with the pen in the center.

The Thanksgiving banner is a combination of flowers, and the Okadee Thanksgiving layered mandalas.

The Thankful banner is another freebie from Special Hearts Studio.

Christmas Cards With Cricut, 2021

Some of the Christmas Cards I made in 2021

Because of a temporary issue with my posts being flagged as spam, none of the links here are clickable.  You can copy and paste them.  Sorry for the inconvenience!

This was a temporary freebie from:
https://thebeardedhousewife.com/how-to-make-cute-christmas-gnome-insert-cards/

I LOVE that this envelope can be made from 8.5x 11 cardstock.

This Nativity "Card" was meant to be a shadow box.  I frequently take these layered designs and turn them into cards.  These are small - 4x4 - and I will use them on some of our cookie plates for neighbors.
The file is $4 from:
https://designbundles.net/my3dsvg/1632892-3d-nativity-svg-christmas-svg?ref=mno4va

I've been working through a variety of Christmas card svgs, to decide which one to make as our card this year (at the same time, my adult daughter is also choosing her card as well).  I have a few more I want to try - although I think we have made our decisions.

The Santa & Snowman count down cards are a limited time freebie from digital gems.  Grab them quick, while they are free!  Quick and easy, these cards are fun to make.
 Find them here: https://digitalgemsdesigns.co.uk/
(There's also a snowflake and a gingerbread version)

I'm mailing these out to family and a couple of friends, but not as our Christmas card

The snowman wrap card is another quick and easy card.  The svg is free from Birds Cards - Find it here: https://www.birdscards.com/snowman-wrap-card/

The Gnome Cycle Box Card is from my scrapchick.  It's currently $2, although this one is often in her $1 sales.  I made it with plain cardstock, and when I make it again, I'll use some patterned and textured papers.  The file comes with an envelope svg too - it's very nice, doesn't take too long to cut, and is easy to assemble, even though there are more pieces to this one than to the ones above.
Find It here: https://myscrapchick.com/shop/gnome-cycle-box-card/

I made the original file a bit larger (which is more complicated with Dreaming Tree files, because of the way each color is uploaded as one svg) and cut it from textured paper.  What a difference those little changes make!

The red truck card is a file from svg cuts that I have had for years, and have modified and used many times, for various holidays and events.  It's $1.99.
Find It Here: https://svgcuts.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3&products_id=459

Caluya has a FREE vintage truck svg that is also very nice  I like the Caluya one better for Easter trucks - they hold jelly beans nicely.  But for Christmas, I like the way this one better folds to be mailed.
The Free Caluya file is here: https://caluyadesign.com/free-3d-christmas-truck-svg/

The pop up card is one of our favorites.  It takes awhile to cut, but it's simple to assemble.  It has a nice cut out front design, then layers that slide into slits and pop up to show a town and Santa and his reindeer.   (The front of the card is shown in the photo below)
That file is $4, find it here:
https://designbundles.net/my-svg-hut/10078-sleigh-bells-ringing-pop-up-card?ref=mno4va

The snow globe is, for what it is, also rather simple to make.  The cuts take a little while, but are not too bad.  (I'm still struggling with getting my new maker to cut paper well - I gave up and had the air2 cut the train for this one.  It cut beautifully in my Air 2.)  I use hot glue to assemble these, but I'd use a glue stick the first time, just to get a good handle on the placement.  Once you do it once, it's really simple to assemble.

This file is also $4.  https://designbundles.net/my-svg-hut/10581-snow-globe-winter-wonderland-train?ref=mno4va://designbundles.net/my-svg-hut/10581-snow-globe-winter-wonderland-train?ref=mno4va

Nov 10th 2021 - On my desk this morning - the snowman box card from my scrapchick.  File is currently $2, but this site frequently has a $1 sale and most box cards are typically included.  Find it here: https://myscrapchick.com/shop/cg-snowman-box-card-2516/

The svg is a quick upload, and this is typical box card construction - not difficult at all.  It is however, a lot of really small pieces.  After cutting the snowman body pieces, there will still be 7 mats of colors.  It will require at least one piece of 12x12 paper for the outside of the card.   The card does fold flat for mailing.

If I were to use this for our Christmas card, I would add a sentiment (Merry Christmas) at the bottom, I think.  And I would definitely use textured cardstock - maybe glitter cardstock? It looks a little plain the way I made it.

On my desk this morning -the Santa Shaped Card from my scrapchick.  (Currently $2)

Have you seen all of the facebook posts about "send me a recipe with your Christmas card ?" My feed has been full of that post for the past week, although I suspect very few recipe cards will actually appear in my mailbox this season.  🙂  Still, when I saw this Santa card, I thought it would be perfect for adding a recipe.

Spoiler alert -  It's not perfect for that - not at all.  But you can make it work.  🙂
I used a lot of textured papers, glitter for the shoes and belt, and I lost Santa's nose somewhere.  I used a lot of pop dots to add dimension, but some inking would really help too.

Shaping the recipe to the list is difficult - you'd want a very simple recipe, and if at all possible, add your text in a different program, then upload the image for print then cut.  It will be much easier than trying to format the text in Design Space.  I printed mine on vellum as an overlay.

The biggest disappointment when I was all done, was to realize that this card cannot stand on it's own.  Santa's feet are not even, or level, enough to stand.  I really should have noticed that sooner.

It's a nice card - I love the shape. But I don't think I'll be making a bunch with recipes.  I'm sure I'll find other uses for it.

Making Advent Calendars With Cricut

Making Advent Calendars

This year we made our own chocolate advent calendars.  The two templates we ended up using were the free tree svg from Jennifer Maker, and a not free German triangle version, which is flat, and perfect for mailing.  The third file we had planned to make just ended up being too difficult for right now.  I'll come back to it later and try again.

The Files:
Jennifer Makers Advent Tree - FREE
https://jennifermaker.com/christmas-tree-advent-calendar-25-days-projects/

Triangle Advent Calendar [German]  - Approx $5
https://designbundles.net/seehas-design/1673694-advent-calendar-1-25-svg-dxf-plotter-file?ref=mno4va

I added the 3D Christmoose SVG on top of one of the triangle calendars
https://designbundles.net/okadee-svg/1655946-3d-christmoose-and-friends-layered-forest-animal-p?ref=mno4va

On the other, I used the FREE Merry Christmas SVG as a sticker
https://designbundles.net/free-design-resources/craft/christmas-wreath-svg-merry-christmas-svg?ref=mno4va

The Carousel Version I did not complete is here
https://designbundles.net/okadee-svg/1655946-3d-christmoose-and-friends-layered-forest-animal-p?ref=mno4va

From the "On My Desk Today" Facebook Post:

The lay flat triangle box is perfect for the chocolate advent calendars we are sending through the mail. The svg is not free, and it's from a German designer. There are English instructions in a pdf file labeled Englisch. The numbers on the boxes only come with the German version.
This design took 10 sheets of 8.5x11 paper. We used an additional sheet of gold foil paper for the numbers on the boxes, and a sheet of sticker paper for the design on the front of the box.

For the numbers on the boxes, we used the svgs from the Jennifer Maker advent calendar.

Selecting the entire box of numbered ornaments, I resized the group to 4.07 wide by 4.747. The design on the front of the box is a free svg -
https://designbundles.net/free-design-resources/craft/christmas-wreath-svg-merry-christmas-svg?ref=mno4va

To make this a sticker, I created a circle shape, layered the svg on top, selected both and flattened. For the second one, I used the 3d Layered Christmoose svg from Okadee, found here: https://designbundles.net/okadee-svg/1655946-3d-christmoose-and-friends-layered-forest-animal-p?ref=mno4va

My advent tree in place on the hutch

For the Jennifer Maker Tree, we used 2 sheets of 12x12 cardstock, and two sheets of gold foil cardstock. Find the free files and instructions here: https://jennifermaker.com/christmas-tree-advent-calendar-25-days-projects/

The biggest problem with this file is the "drawers" on the finished tree are constantly sliding out, every time the tree is bumped. We added some sticky felt under the drawers and on the base, but they still slide, especially if anything heavy is placed in the drawers. I might try some sandpaper adhered on the inside next?

Next up for us is this carousel one - which is in french! I bought the file when it was 99 cents, and I suspect this one will be 99 cents again in the Black Friday Sales coming up.

On My Desk - Thanksgiving Projects

Thanksgiving Projects Made With Cricut
Not all of these were made this year - some are from the past two years.  Most of the files are free, but some are not.  Here's a look at each one, and where to find the files.

On the curtain on the far left is a pumpkin with flowers, it's a FREE svg from Crafts With Sarah  - https://www.craftwithsarah.com/cricut-crafts/pumpkin-sunflowers-svg/

The Card at the top is the FREE Gobble Gobble Card.   It has a matching envelope too!

Gobble Gobble Card
I love that this sites cards almost always have coordinating envelopes. This particular card is a lot of pieces - and some of the pieces are very small. I use painters tape to hold the tiny eyes and buckles at my desk, so they don't get lost before I use them.
For glue, I use glue sticks, the elmers craft bond precision tip, and on the envelopes sides, I use a hot glue gun.

The layered Thankful Banner is a FREE svg from Special Hearts Studio

Bearly Art Standing Turkey
The turkey on the left, which stands on it's own (it's on a small corner shelf here) is a FREE file from Bearly Art.  This is one of my favorite files this fall, I've made 5 of these.  They are pretty quick and easy!

Layered Pilgrim, Indian, and Turkey mandalas are from Okadee.
If you bought the huge paper cutting bundle in the last $1 deals sale at Design Bundles, these were in there.

Flower Centerpiece, with painted paper flowers
This Flower box centerpiece svg was part of the Creative Fabrica Christmas in July Sale - making it just 50 cents at the time.

Here's how I made it, painting my paper flowers for the dimensional look on plain recollections cardstock.

Thanksgiving Pillow
This was a free svg at one time, from a site that no longer exists.  :-(  It wouldn't be too difficult to create something similar with a variety of fonts.
Here's a post on how to make pillow cases, and other fall pillow case designs.

There's a long list of free Thanksgiving SVGS here:

Thankful, Grateful, & Blessed Dollar Tree Pumpkin Stack
Step by Step - Using Free Fonts

Googly Eye Turkey Treat Box
This one is NOT a free file - it's around $3.50

More  Gobble Gobble Cards
FREE svg from: https://shrsl.com/37vs3

Another one of the Bearly Art Turkeys
FREE svg

Tea Light Turkey
This folds flat and fits into the envelope in front of it!  Then you can "pop it up" and add a tea light candle inside.  FREE Svg

The Plate is a Gilmore Girls Quote

Gilmore Girls Thanksgiving Sign
on a Dollar Tree Charger Plate
I made this Dollar Tree Charger Plate Sign in 2020.
I can't find the project in my Design Space, and I don't recognize that font.  I do not know what I used, sorry!  The text on the outside rim is Biosha Sans, I use that font a lot. It's part of a font trio I downloaded when it was temporarily free.

The Military Tree - Cricut Christmas Ornaments

I have several Christmas trees here each year. In our dining room, I have a thin pencil tree that is our military tree. I'm gradually completing ornaments with photos of each family member & ancestor who has served.

For these photo ornaments, I printed the photos on sticker paper, which I then attached to the clear transparency paper.  Typically I print right on the transparency paper, but for these, I wanted a more visible photo, and I want to add information on the back without it showing through.

Here's a step by step for the clear acetate ornaments:
(I cut the template twice - once from transparency paper, once on sticker paper.  I printed only on the sticker paper, for these ornaments.)

Here's a step by step for making the Our Hearts Aim High Air Force Ornament:

A Step by Step for the RED Friday Ornaments

The paper ornaments are from this bundle (not free) https://crafthousesvg.com/products/3d-american-flag-svg-bundle-mb88?_pos=1&_sid=e8e82c963&_ss=r?ref=6959505 I skipped the pop dots and put them together with a glue stick - fast and so much easier - perfect for this project. I sized them at 4 inches wide.
