Halloween Reading List 2023

Frankenstein, Dracula, the Salem Witch Trials.  Gothic, Ghosts, Hauntings.
Thrillers, Cozy Mysteries, Historical Fiction.

I know I won't possibly read all of these this year, I'll likely only get to 4 or 5 of them at most.  But here's a look at the Halloween themed reads that caught my attention this year:

On My Desk, 2022 -   I wanted something a little "cuter" for this project, not too scary.

Vintage Dumb [or Silent] Cake

Dumb [or "silent] Cake "A Halloween Dainty"
In the 1914 Table Decorations & Delicacies by Hester Price, a guide for hostesses, the Dumb Cake is specified to be a "Halloween Dainty".  The cake however, which had to be both prepared and consumed in complete silence,  was featured at several holidays, including  St Agnes’ Eve, St Anne’s Eve,  Halloween, and  Christmas Eve,

A Spider On A Stick - Kids Craft With Cricut

My grandson is currently obsessed with spiders.  The Itsy Bitsy Spider, in particular - we've watched that episode of Sesame Street more times than I can count.  We've already made the spider on a web craft, where he can make the spider go up and down on a string.  And we made a pipe cleaner spider.  Today we put a spider on a stick, which he can then make "walk" by moving the stick.

Download the SVG here

Once the svg is uploaded into design space, select all and resize the group to 10.5 wide.

Cut the second head circle in whatever color you want to show through the eyes and mouth.  Red, Green, and White all work well.

We then added googly eyes on top of the cut out eyes.  Because...  the 2 year old assistant believes EVERY project needs googly eyes.  :-)

Assembly is simple - just glue the legs across criss cross.  I let the 2 year old do that with very little assistance.  Then I used hot glue to add a wooden skewer.  Regular glue would work - but I like hot glue.  Add a circle over the top to cover all of that.

Then just bend the legs  - two bends, one closer to the body, and one to make "feet".
The legs bounce up a bit when you move the stick to "walk" the spider.  This was surprisingly entertaining.  :-)

On My Desk 10/9/21 - Halloween Paper Crafts

On My Desk The Week Of 10/9/21 - Halloween Paper Crafts

Throughout the week, I post what I am working on on my facebook page, along with notes on what worked, and didn't work, for me when making the project.  Occasionally I will then copy all of those facebook posts into one blog post.

Quick List Of Where To Find The SVGS:
Boo To You Bundle [hanging pumpkin & witch]

For scale - and because I just loved seeing these all lined up together on my desk.  :-)
The house and lantern are both about 12 inches tall.  Winney Witch is closer to 15 inches.

Halloween Vertical Signs On Ceramic Floor Tiles (free svgs)

Vertical Halloween Signs Made with ceramic floor tiles and free svgs from Design Hippo

Tips & Reference:

  • I used 6x24 ceramic floor tiles.  You can sometimes find boxes really cheap at Lowes, often a discontinued pattern, or an odd box.  You can sometimes find white ones that would save you some painting too.
  • TIP  - Paint the tiles the day before.  The paint is much more likely to peel up if you do not let them dry thoroughly.
  • I used a variety of paints on the different tiles I made.  Surprisingly, Rustoleum spray paint did NOT work well for me. But that may have been because it was too cold outside, or because I didn't let it dry long enough.  Martha Stewart Chalk Paint & cheap  Apple barrel craft paint both worked well.  I tried modge podge over the paint, but I think that made the paint peel more, not less.  The key was to  make sure the tiles were room temperature when I painted them (not left in the cold garage overnight...) and then let them dry for at least a day.  You could also try using Press & Seal as your transfer tape, but once I let them dry long enough,  I didn't have any problems with the paint lifting.

This is now a very ad intensive, and slightly confusing, site.  The download  is NOT any of the blue buttons.  It will be near the bottom of the page, under an ad, and will look like this, as of August 2023:

Halloween Lampshade with Cricut

I love decorating lampshades with vinyl. The vinyl is on the inside, so the design is only seen when the light is turned on.

The free svg I used can be found here:

I ungrouped the design and removed the top and bottom parts.  If you are using those, make sure to flip your design.  Even though you use regular (Not HTV) vinyl to make these , you reverse the design as if you were using HTV.  That's because the design is applied to the inside, the sticky side will be facing out.  For black vinyl, Frisco Matte is my favorite brand - and it's the cheapest I've found too!

This is the one I made for Christmas

And this one, in our guest room (where our grandson sometimes stays - this is a touch lamp)
