Quick Tip - Close The Lid For Print Then Cut

For more Tips For Solving Simple Print Then Cut Problems:

If you have an HP Printer, check out instant Ink.
It's SO much cheaper.  You pay by the page, not the ink cartridge.
So you can always print in best quality, for the same price as draft.
See the details here:

Quick Tip - Use Attach Instead Of Slice

Although there are times you will want to use slice, often there is no need—Attach will do the exact same thing in less steps!  When you attach, you tell cricut where to cut the text.  So if it is attached to the shape, it will cut out of the shape, exactly the same as if you had gone through all the steps to slice

Update - Did you see that we no longer need to weld text before we slice?  Apparently in one of the latest updates, text boxes became "one" item, no matter how many letters you used.  So you can now type your text, place it on a shape, and slice, WITHOUT welding the text first.

Quick Tip - When Uploaded Images Are Not Showing In A Project

When You Can See The Image In The Layers Panel, But Not On The Canvas

Sometimes when you upload an image to Design Space, it does not show up on the screen, although it appears in the layers panel.  That is usually because the default upload placed them off the main grid area.  It's a quick and simple fix.

Select the  item in the layers panel (or "select all")
, then at the top of the screen find the "position" box.
Change it to 2, and 2.

You should then see the items in your work area.

Quick Tip - How To Use Color Sync

Beside your layers panel, there is a "Color Sync" option.
This is useful if you have accidentally used several shades of one color, but only have one shade of that color of vinyl;.  To quickly change all of your yellows to the same yellow, simply drag the ones you want to change to the color you would like them to be.

In 2022 Cricut Updates, the Color Sync Menu has changed it's appearance, but it still works essentially the same.

If you only want to change the color of one iems,  drag and change the color, make sure you have the item (for instance, "rolledflowers 2" selected, and NOT the square group icon above the item, unless you want to change the color

If you want to change the entire group, making all of the light purple items dark purple, for instance, drag the square group icon to the color you want all of the items to be.

Quick Tip - When To Attach, Weld, & Flatten

Attach - Attach tells cricut to cut exactly as you have it in design space.  You will only have one color of vinyl on the mat at a time, so you also only want to attach one color at a time.  If you attach all, your entire design will cut in one color.  Select all the Blue, Attach.  Select all the red, attach.  Etc.  Then all of the blue items will cut exactly as you have placed them in your design, and all of the red items will cut, etc.

Quick Tip - How To Find The Name Of A Font You Welded In Design Space

To see the name of a font once it has been welded, in Design Space, right click on the welded image in the layers panel.  Choose "Image info" at the bottom of the menu.  The name of the font will then be there, but it is in a very faint text, so it can be difficult to read.

Another option is to screenshot the text and upload it to a site such as What The Font, or What Font Is: https://fieldsofhether.blogspot.com/2021/02/comparing-sites-that-identify-fonts.html

Quick Tip - How To Slice In Design Space

The slice button will only appear, and work, with exactly two items.

Previously, each letter of text counted as one item, and you had to weld your text before you could slice.

This feature is one that has changed a few times in the 2022 updates.  Sometimes you can slice text from a shape without welding, sometimes you need to weld first.  Currently a text box counts as one item.  But if you have a text box and just one other item selected, and the slice option does not appear, its worth a try to weld or unite the text and then see if you can slice.
=========================

Quick Tip - If your slice button is "grayed out" it is most likely because you do not have two items selected. When slicing text, each letter counts as one item. If you select all of your text and choose weld, it will make the text one item, and then you can slice it from your shape.

No longer as necessary, since text boxes are considered one item  - Text no longer needs to be welded before you slice it.

Quick Tip - How To Search Facebook Group Posts

If you are looking for the answer to a question you know has been talked about before, on a facebook group, it's easy to search the posts.

Well, it's sort of easy. Sometimes the results do not show what you know is there, and that's why I never mind when people ask for something in my facebook group.  I'm happy to help.

But you can try to search for things yourself first, if you want.  Search "free kitchen svgs" or "how to write with cricut", for example, to find posts about those subjects.

In my cricut fb group, I use themed posts to build the posts you later see on this blog.  So if you search "free kitchen svgs", for example, you should see a post with the link to the blog post for free kitchen svgs, and then there will be lots more links in the comments, with more free files that I have not yet added.  You will also find threads of free svgs for themes that have not yet made it to the blog.   You can join us and see all of those posts, here:

Quick Tip - How To Fix Jumbled Text Or Designs In Design Space

If  you clicked "Make It" in Design Space, and found your design to be all out of order, go back, select everything that is the same color, and "attach"

Then Design Space will send each part of your design to it's own mat by color, keeping each item spaced exactly where you placed it.

Attach can waste a lot of vinyl.  If you have a 11.5 by 11.5 inch design, and just one piece of red at the top and one at the bottom, you do not want to attach those.  You can manually place those pieces.  But when you have a smaller design, it's often worth it to "waste" a little vinyl to save the hassle of trying to properly place all the pieces separately.

Note - In 2022, the new text box updates keep text from jumbling quite so much
.  Previously, if you typed Cat into a text box, it might be sent to the mat as tCa.  Now, everything in one text box will stay in order, so Cat will go to the mat as Cat.  But if you have several text boxes, and you want them all to stay spaced the way you have placed them, you will still need to select all of your text boxes and attach them together.  And items in an svg will still need to be attached if you want them to cut exactly the way they appear on the mat.

How To Use Free Dingbat Fonts As Cut Files

Did you know that there are many free fonts with graphics you can cut with your cricut?  Not just flourishes and frames, but full sketches.  For instance, here is Harry Potter & The Dingbats on dafont:

How To Use Free Dingbat Fonts As Cut Files

Every one of those images is already a "cut file".  Use it just as you would any other font.  For me, I open it in Fontlab Pad, so there is no need to install the font and clutter up my font list.  You can use fonts right from the zip files in fontlab pad.    (This will not work for ALL dingbat fonts.  Sometimes you have to install them for FLP to read them)

For Dobby, I just had to type the letter K, as shown in the chart on the fonts download page.
Then I saved it as an svg, just as I would with any system font I want to use in Design Space.  (Because, DS space does not read font kerning and never displays system fonts properly)

Then I upload it to Design space, just a I would any other svg.
Now, that does not mean this will cut well.  Some of these images have a LOT of detail, and it could take awhile, or be a real pain to weed.  But they will all cut.

Free Dingbat Fonts
There are dingbat fonts for just about everything, from sports logos, to Disney, to Coffee & Unicorns.   At Dafont, go to the Dingbat category - https://www.dafont.com/mtheme.php?id=7
In the bar across the top you will see a listing for dingbat themes, you can click on any of these for more animals, or logos, etc. -
Please be aware that these are not all family friendly.  Even in categories you might think would be.

Here's a sampling of what you will find:

There are 6 pages in the Tv & Movie Category.  Star Wars, Hogwarts, Disney, Snoopy, Star Trek, Loony Toons, and so, so very much more

In the Games Category, you will find everything from playing cards, Poker, Chess, and Dice, to Mario Brothers and Sonic

In the Logos category you will find eveything from social media icons to football teams to fast food restaurants, and soda brands.  All sorts of logos. (There's a whole category just for sports, too, find that here.)

In the Nature category there are mountains, leaves, MANY different flower designs (including the folk art style) and there was even a camper in one font.

Another example from the nature cateogory - fall designs, including Pooh & Hello Kitty

The Army Category has a lot of guns, ships, airplanes, targets... and even military designs such as the blue star mom flag, medal, army logo, and more.

The Horror Category is a lot of skulls and horror movie icons, but it's also where you will find several fonts full of sugar skulls

Here you will find everything from instruments and musical notes, to entire fonts dedicated to artists such as Bob Marley, Justin Bieber, and Michael Jackson.

This category is...  diverse.  Flags from various countries, drones, buses, buildings, more logos, cartoons, retro graphics, bicycles, watches...  There's one called Transportation with everything from hotair baloons and trolleys to old cars, one of pirate ships, and one called "My town" that appears to just be everything in this persons town from a  Burger King logo to a duck.

Also in Various -

The Kid Category is almost as diverse as the Various category.  Everything from cartoons and cute animals, to babies, and animals on surfboards.  Doodle Bears is especially cute.
