3D Paper Luminaries
This project is from Heart Filled Spaces - and was designed as a Silhouette project. Svgs often work the same in Silhouette or Cricut, but for this project.. it takes a few adjustments. I found a quick and efficient way to "fix' it in Design Space, which I will show you step by step below.
Once you get it set up in Design Space, this cuts beautifully and it's really pretty fast and easy to put together! She used a special paper cement glue, but we found that hot glue worked great for these, and I already had hot glue on hand. :-)

Step By Step With Cricut:
DOWNLOAD THE FILES
First go here:
This site has a "Freebie Vault", and requires you to sign up for her emails to obtain access to the free files. Sign up was quick and easy, and the password arrived in my inbox within a minute or so.
Once you have the password entered, scroll down and you will see this:
Ignore the Cricut PDF File.
Click on the second item - the Pumpkin Luminary Panels.
If you just "regular click" on the link, it will open in Google Drive and look like this:
On the top right, beside the printer, see that down arrow? Click on that to download the file.
Now go back, and download the other two files as well.
Now you should have three downloaded files. If you have an svg viewer extension installed, it should look something like this:
If you do not have the extension, you may just see three icons that look like website shortcuts. That's ok, it will work just fine - but if you want to see previews of your svg images, here's how:
UPLOADING THE FILES
Open Design space, then upload the Pumpkin Luminary Panels File.
Notice that there are 6 panels here. We need 12. And we need to attach those score lines.
The easiest way to do this is, once you upload the panels, ungroup, then delete 5 of the panels, leaving just one.
Ungroup, Delete 5 panels
ATTACH THE SCORE LINES
With just one panel left, in the layers panel on the right in Design Space, click on the "Pumpkin Luminary Panel" with the arrow beside it. That will select the entire group of items below it. Now at the bottom, choose attach, to attach your score lines to the panel.
RESIZE - Once the score lines are attached, resize to: 1.794 x 8.595
Next, Upload the "Pumpkin Luminary Vellum"
This time you will see 5 panels. Again, we are going to need 12. So delete all but one.
Select just the vellum panel, resize it to 1.822x7.64
CHANGE SCORE LINES TO SCORE, NOT CUT
Not shown on this card is "score", but you will find it in the same location
Note: For our first one, I tried making these without score lines - we just deleted them completely. It can be done, but the score lines make it a lot easier!
RESIZE THE VELLUM PANEL TO 1.822x7.64
Save Your Project.
Now we're going to click Make it on this part of the design. There's an entire part we haven't yet uploaded, but that's ok. We have two images in our project. We need to make 12 of each of those two items, so after clicking Make It, at the top on the left, change project copies to 12, and Apply. Don't forget to click "Apply"
You can change the paper size in the "material size" box under the mat. Default is usually 12x12, but I wanted to use 8.5x11 paper for this project. Because it's cheaper and I already had it on hand. :-)
For Cutting Vellum, set your machine to "custom" and choose Vellum from the setting options.
Upload The Pumpkin Luminary Parts
Once that has cut, go back to your project, and hide both of the panels. In the layers panel on the right in Design Space, click on the eye beside the names. You will still have them in your list in the layers panel, but they will no longer appear on your design space canvas.
Now upload the Pumpkin Luminary Parts. They will upload as one group, and they will not be the correct size.
See the line through the eye on the far right? That means that piece is still part of my project, but I'm not using it right now. Objects that are hidden will not cut when you click Make It.
RESIZE THE GROUP TO 10.013 x 9.28
I'm including the sizes for the individual pieces below, but if you resize the entire group, you won't need to resize anything else.
Luminary Parts 10.013 x 9.28
- Leaf - 4.082 x 3.733
- Stem 0.963x6.354
- Ring dodecagon (Looks like an "octogon", but 12 sides)- 3.995x3.995
- Solid dodecagon (Looks like an "octagon", but 12 - 2.521x2.483
- Rectangle Strip (4 of them) 5.75x.0.427
ATTACH THE SCORE LINES
To attach the score lines, you will first need to ungroup the design. Make sure you resized the group first, then ungroup.
Clicking ungroup just once will ungroup the pieces, but it will leave the score lines grouped with the rectangles. That's good - no need to ungroup the score lines.
Click on each the score lines and change them from Cut to Score. You'll find that option under Line Type. Then attach each of the score lines.
Save your project again, then click make it to cut out the pumpkin parts.
ASSEMBLE
Getting the design set up in Design space and cut was the hardest part! Special Hearts has a step by step walk through of the assembly here:
https://heartfilledspaces.com/how-to-make-paper-pumpkins-for-your-fall-decor/
We used glue sticks to attach the vellum, and hot glue to put the pieces together, in place of the paper cement she used.
This is the photo that best "sums up" the assembly, from the Special Hearts site
Glue your vellum panels to your cardstock panels.
Then place a panel along each side of your solid decagon (an octagon has 8 sides, a decagon has 12 sides)
Place the second decagon over top, then place the 4 rectangles on every 3rd panel.
That's the top of the pumpkin.
These go together so well, it's really a quick and easy project - Once you get it all set up in Design Space to cut properly!
Now you attach the panels to the bottom piece, folding the tabs over the outside of the decagon ring. Then glue the second decagon ring over the top. Your lights insert through the bottom. These could sit over batter operated candles, or even battery operated tea lights in votive cups.

These are beautiful! I can think of so many places these could be used in the house. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeletewhat a great project! They are beautiful
ReplyDeleteThese look amazing! It's a shame I don't own a Cricut machine :( I'll put it on my gift list I think :)
ReplyDeleteI would have had a go at these but heartfilledspaces does not seem to have an option to sign up to get the library password. it says to enter your name & email into the spaces but there are no spaces, only the one to enter the password. can't find a signup on any other page either. I give up and won't bother
ReplyDeleteIt might depend on browser - but it's right near the top for me here - https://heartfilledspaces.com/
DeleteOn the library page, it is on the far right - at the top, when using my computer - I haven't looked at the mobile version, it may not display the same there. https://heartfilledspaces.com/svg-cut-library-for-newsletter-subscribers/
