Christmas Vertical Signs on Ceramic Floor Tiles

Vertical Christmas Signs on Ceramic Floor Tiles

Tips & Reference:

  • I used 6x24 ceramic floor tiles.  You can sometimes find boxes really cheap at Lowes, often a discontinued pattern, or an odd box.  You can sometimes find white ones that would save you some painting too.
  • TIP  - Paint the tiles the day before.  The paint is much more likely to peel up if you do not let them dry thoroughly.
  • I used a variety of paints on the different tiles I made.  Surprisingly, Rustoleum spray paint did NOT work well for me. But that may have been because it was too cold outside, or because I didn't let it dry long enough.  Martha Stewart Chalk Paint & cheap  Apple barrel craft paint from Wal-Mart both worked well.  I tried modge podge over the paint, but I think that made the paint peel more, not less.  The key was to  make sure the tiles were room temperature when I painted them (not left in the cold garage overnight...) and then let them dry for at least a day.  You could also try using Press & Seal as your transfer tape, but once I let them dry long enough,  I didn't have any problems with the paint lifting.
  • To get a good dark blue, and deep red, in the apple barrel paints, add a little black to True Navy, or Tuscan Red.

I spent some time with these designs before cutting them, deleting some of the shading pieces that I found to be unnecessary layers, and attaching like colors that were close together so they cut in the correct piece.  It wasn't difficult, but it was a little time consuming, since I was working on so many different designs tonight.  (I have more cut that are not completed - the paint is still drying on some of the floor tiles.)

The white signs are done in a Martha Stewart craft paint that crackled a bit, and combined with the green and red vinyl from Craftables, they are such a great retro look - the photos do not do them justice.

For Black & White, Frisco brand is still my favorite, and the cheapest too!

  1. Just an FYI for Cricut Design Space Access Subscribers (as of Sept 2021) these same vertical signs are available in Access - Search Image Sets for BlackCatSVG - Christmas Porch Signs. If you aren't an Access subscriber, you can purchase individual images outright.

    1. Just remember that when you purchase designs in DS, you cannot download them and save them. You essentially are renting them, and can only use them in Design Space.
