It's Monday - What are You Reading? Jan 28

3

What I am reading the most of are wills and census reports.. I've spent a lot of time working on genealogy this past week.  :-)

Last week I finished:
The Shoemaker's Wife
I get that this was a beautiful story.  I appreciated it for many reasons, but I didn't particularly enjoy reading it.  I think I might have if I had been more prepared for exactly what it was..  I have never read anything by Tigiani before, and I don't think i expected it to be this long and.. wandering.  I expected it to be about one life (The Shoemakers WIFE) and was surprised when it told the story of so many of the characters.  I think I will choose something else by Trigiani this summer.

The Good Wife's Guide: Embracing Your Role as a Help Meet
This was part of my working my way through my stack of blogger books..  many of which were self published. Of that stack, this was definitely the best! It is hard to read straight through as a book though.  Like all of the others I read like this, they are like blog posts. The tips for homekeeping are great, but not so great for straight through reading, and too short to be a full reference book.  (And again, the tips were aimed more at new homekeepers I think?  Who, with 4 teens, can only vacuum out their car a couple of times a year???  Or again is that just us that are complete slobs and NEED to do this every week?)  The entire book felt disjointed, two halves that didn't quite fit together.  I would have enjoyed it more if the back reference was split up and placed in with the first half the book, breaking it into more manageable chunks, almost like a devotional format for homekeeping.

This week I am Reading:
I wanted to love this..  I love Nancy Drew, so a parody seemed like a fun idea. But so far, it feels like too much of a parody - like it went too far into silly and a little mean spirited maybe?  Like other reviewers, I think it has been too long since I have read the Nancy Drew books, I think I am missing too many of the references.  This book IS inspiring me to read the Nancy Drew Series again.  :-)

Let. It. Go.: How to Stop Running the Show and Start Walking in Faith
This book is soooooo good!  We are doing the video series in our Sunday School Class.

A Year in the Life of William Shakespeare: 1599
I made NO progress on this book last week. Not because it is not good, it has been excellent so far..  but because it is a "real" paper book, which means it sits in one location, and is not with me when I have a few minutes to read. I need to schedule time to read this into my days somewhere..  today is a snow day, nearly everything is closed, I am home all day..  I should be able to at least read a chapter!  :-)

Walden
Another one I made no progress in last week.  I'm only a chapter into this.  I WILL finish it. I will.  Eventually.

Bible Memory Plan
One chapter a week - that is the way this is meant to be read, so this will be on my list all year long.  It hasn't been earth shattering, the verses so far have not been necessarily what I would have chosen (and I have felt like I have been cheating, since they are verses I aleady knew pretty well and did not need much effort to memorize), but the point of this is the discipline of doing it, and for that, the format is ideal.

  1. I've looked at the Shoemaker's Wife a few times but have passed over it.

  2. I'm listening to The SHoemaker's Wife on audio right now, and I think it's the better medium. I get what you mean by it being about multiple characters, but I'm quite enjoying it - and by enjoying, I mean it's moving me, since I'm near the end, and it's getting a little sad :-(
